The Exe Valley Federation is committed to meeting the requirements of the primary National Curriculum. Our curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 and provides other experiences and opportunities which enhance the learning and developmental needs of our children.
The National Curriculum comprises core and foundation subjects. The three core subjects are English, Mathematics and Science and these take up a larger share of curriculum teaching time. The foundation subjects are: Art and Design, Computing (previously Information and Communications Technology, or ICT), Design and Technology, Languages (previously Foreign Languages), Geography, History, Music and Physical Education.
The main curriculum is extended with other aspects of learning, including personal, social and health education. There is also significant emphasis put on social, moral, spiritual and cultural development. We prepare children for life in modern Britain through learning about Democratic values to ensure that children are prepared for, and have an appreciation of, life in modern Britain. We also teach Religious Education as a discrete subject in order to deepen children’s understanding of the major world religions.
The National Curriculum provides the outline of knowledge, skills and understanding of what is required to be covered in school. The core subjects are usually taught in focused, subject specific lessons that make use of links to other areas of the curriculum. We use Talk for Writing as the basis of our English curriculum and supplement it with other material, especially when teaching Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. In Maths we use a range of resources including Abacus and Rising Stars to ensure that all aspects of the Maths curriculum are covered. Science is taught in blocks, often using dedicated science weeks to ensure that the curriculum is covered in depth.
We choose to teach some of the Foundation subjects through creative, cross-curricular themes based on the Cornerstones Curriculum Independent Learning Projects. This enables children to learn different strands of the curriculum from a range of subjects, all within one common theme for a term. Computing, music and PE are usually taught discretely but are incorporated into the Cornerstones IDPs when appropriate. We follow National Curriculum guidelines, full details can be found here.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage Framework and Development Matters are the basis of our Nursery and Reception curriculum. In Reception, we give children plenty of opportunities to read, write and apply their mathematical understanding. As a result, our children start Year 1 as confident and competent learners. There is a daily phonics session taught in our Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 classes in accordance with the Letters and Sounds document. This provides a synthetic and systematic approach to the teaching of phonics and supports both the development of children's reading and writing skills. Children in Key Stage 2 who have not yet acquired the necessary skills, or who are not yet secure in applying them independently, take part in focused intervention groups.

Our curriculum gives everyone this opportunity and encourages learning in the broadest sense through lessons, projects, home learning, visits and visitors and using the world around us to develop skills that will last a lifetime.
